Yesterday I threw my first children’s birthday party for my daughter. We celebrated Elise’s half birthday with family and friends at our community pool.
And it was awesome!
There’s something really special about seeing your child enjoy something for the first time.
We’ve been to the pool a few times, but this time she really had fun. The kiddie pool was super clean and had fountains that she loved standing under. Two other girls close to her age came and played in the pool as well. We had snacks and cupcakes and sang Happy Birthday. It couldn’t have gone better.
When we celebrated Elise’s first birthday in December, we were out of town with family and couldn’t invite any of my new mom friends and their families. Having been to some of their parties, I knew I wanted to have one myself. The whole shebang with a theme and goody bags and games. I was sad when December and then January came and went, so I decided that we had to have a half birthday.
And instead of being stuck inside with cold weather we had the most perfect pool party in the warm sunshine.
As the party got closer I kept thinking to myself that this was the only year I’d do a half birthday. That my daughter deserved to celebrate on her actual birthday. And she does.
But doing her actual birthday with family and then a half birthday with friends gives her an excuse to celebrate twice!
So I think we’ll do this again next year. When she’s old enough, I’ll let Elise decide when she wants to celebrate - but until then she’ll just have to deal with two birthday celebrations. What a chore.
